ABKHAZIA (CHERVACHIDZÉ)

In the 8th century AD the Kingdom of Abkhazia emerged in the western part of the Caucasus, which was united with Georgia at the end of the 10th century. Queen Tamar the Great of Georgia granted around 1200 the lordship over a part of Abkhazia to the Georgian noble family Chervachidzé (spelled as well Shirvashidze), which became virtually independent by the end of the 15th century. Since the mid 16th century the area fell under the Ottoman sphere of influence, until the Russian annexation of the Georgian kingdoms in 1801 and 1810. In 1864 the Russians deposed Mikhail Giorgievitch (Hamid Bey) Prince Chervachidzé, last sovereign Prince of Abkhazia (1806-1866). His only son Mikhail died in 1899, after which his nephew Alexander Konstantinovitch Prince Chervachidzé (1867-1968) succeeded as head of the family.
